The experiment was a great success. Our 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Leonard, was in charge of the experiment to hatch some chicks at school. Mrs. Leonard provided a lot of great pictures of the process and we interviewed her about this fun experiment in her class.
Blog: So, please Mrs. Leonard, update us on your embryology experiment with the 3rd graders!
Mrs. Leonard: Well, of our 8 eggs, 4 of them opened. Two chicks cracked open their shells and emerged without any problems. We did an assisted hatch with one, but that chick didn't quite make it.
Blog: Where are the two live chicks now?
Mrs. Leonard: After a few days, we took the chicks back to the Children's Animal Farm in Palos.
Blog: Was it tough to lose a couple of the chicks?
Mrs Leonard: Sure, it was difficult, but we had a burial service for the eggs and chicks that didn't make it. Ms. Finn and some of the 7th graders helped us bury them near the school. I am so thankful to Ms. Finn and the 7th grade class for all their help in this project.
Blog: What was the best part of the experiment?
Mrs. Leonard: The kids absolutely loved holding the chicks. That was very special.
Blog: Do you plan on doing this again next year?
Mrs. Leonard: Definitely! Next year, I think we will try ducks eggs and chick eggs. I'm really looking forward to it.
Thank you, Mrs. Leonard!
